Lycian Way

Nearby sections of the Lycian Way

One of the world’s best – and best known – long distance trekking routes, the Lycian Way, runs for 500 km between Fethiya and Antalya taking in Kalkan on its way. This means, of course, that anyone resident or on holiday in the Kalkan area has ready-made trails to explore right on the door step.

Most of the hiking I have done in this area has been well off the beaten path, however I have checked out a number of short sections of the Lycian Way in the Kalkan and Kas vicinity. So, for anyone on holiday in Kalkan thinking of doing part of the Lycian Way, here are a few suggestions, using Google Earth to show you the way.

But first a word of warning regarding the weather. The best time for walking in this part of Turkey is Spring and Autumn, mid winter too for that matter as long as the sun is shining. It’s only the months of July and August, when temperatures hit the 40 Celsius mark, that are really out of the question. So, in short, come off season if you want to do any walking.

Here then is a list of short Lycian Way walks near Kalkan. I haven’t timed them or taken notes along the way, so the information is minimal, little more than a series of way points taken from Google Earth. Nonetheless, having emailed them previously to friends, it may be that someone will find them useful.

1. Roman aqueduct walk from Akbel via Delikkemer to Patara.

2. Roman aqueduct walk fro Uzumlu via In Pinar to Cavdir.

3. Old mule trail from Kalkan to Bezirgan.

4. Walk via Lycian cliff tombs from Big Pebble Beach, Kas, to Lima Agzi.

5. Walk from Villa Lukka to Akbel following the Lycian Way.

Thanks to Kate Clow and Terry Richardson, the creators of the Lycian Way walk, and to the numerous others who helped them (http://www.lycianway.com/).
