In the heat of summer, a trip to Saklikent Gorge is not to be missed. The canyon is 18 kilometres long and has walls hundreds of metres high. From the entrance it’s possible to wade and scramble about 4 kilometres upstream through the icy cold stream. Alternatively, there are cafes and restaurants where you can relax on cushioned wooden platforms overlooking the river.
Welcome to The Lycian Shore, a website about the Tekke Peninsula of south western Turkey - the area known in ancient times as Lycia. The site takes it title from a book of the same name by the distinguished English travel writer Freya Stark who travelled through the area in the 1950s. A great writer and intrepid traveller, Freya Stark had this to say about Lycia:
"There are not so many places left where magic reigns without interruption and of all those I know, the coast of Lycia was the most magical."
Much has changed since the 1950s, but the magic remains.
